Introducing the Sonic Training Academy
The Sonic Training Academy offers a unique opportunity to enable you to work with us as an apprentice and complete the required training to become a Biomedical Scientist.
The apprenticeship model allows you to work and earn a salary whilst studying part time to complete an IBMS accredited degree in Biomedical Science. Upon graduation you will be eligible to apply for HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist. The degree is also paid for by us meaning that you graduate with no student debt.
About the Academy
The Academy is an initiative started by Sonic Healthcare UK to address the shortfall in experienced biomedical scientists.
We are committed to a ‘grow your own’ workforce strategy which develops staff from the ground and supports them through their career with us. The Training Academy is aimed at supporting those who have completed the relevant A-Level or BTEC qualifications, and provide them with the opportunity to experience fundamental exposure to a laboratory environment and gain life-long scientific skills, whilst completing a Biomedical Science degree.
The apprenticeship model provides an amazing opportunity for students to ‘earn while they learn’. Trainees get to earn a salary whilst working through a degree that we pay for meaning they graduate with no student debt. Furthermore, the qualification that students are working towards will make further employment opportunities in the healthcare industry much easier to obtain. Learning skills and then directly applying them to day-to-day work really helps people to learn. Our experienced scientists and colleagues at the University of Westminster will be on hand at every turn to help them through their course.
Having four years of experience working in a diagnostic laboratory puts them way ahead of their peers at graduation.
The Academy Team
The Sonic Training Academy is successfully recruiting for their second consecutive year. I am so pleased to be able to showcase this opportunity and celebrate the success of the training academy.
The ‘grow your own’ culture embedded in the academy will ensure that students are provided the necessary qualifications and practical laboratory experience to allow the direct application of the theory learnt at university to be applied in practice in our laboratories.
The newly created Training Academy Laboratory Facility at the Royal Free Hospital is a unique and versatile space where practical sessions are run for the students by experts in the scientific field, further enhancing their skills in line with the biomedical science degree and preparing them for a career in pathology.
Not only is the degree funded by Sonic Healthcare UK, but the students will also be working as trainee biomedical scientists and earning a salary whilst they learn. Being the largest biomedical science apprenticeship employer in the UK, this really is a fantastic opportunity.
I am very much looking forward to continuing our intake for the training academy and investing in our future workforce of biomedical scientists.

Information for educational institutions
To support students in making a decision about an apprenticeship, we offer opportunities for outreach days which allow students to come and visit our laboratories and talk to scientists and get more information about the apprenticeship. The Training Academy can also attend Career Fairs, as well as perform in-person and virtual presentations about the Academy and the apprenticeship.
