How you’ll be taught
Apprentices will study on a day release basis throughout the year. Although in year 1 all modules are taught on campus – there is an understanding that online study can be substituted in pre-determined weeks when there are no practical classes or assessment-linked workshops. Engagement with these study days is monitored to ensure that study has taken place. In the later years e-learning is blended into the mode of study to allow greater flexibility for apprentices and employers.
Ways of learning include:
- Lectures: supported through e-resources, theory sessions and small group seminars.
- E-learning: The University Virtual Learning Environment (NOW) is used to post lecture slides and other useful resources.
- Laboratory classes: hands-on acquisition of practical skills involving problem solving, data collection and observation.
- Discussions: held in one-to-ones and small groups regarding up-to-date research, oral presentations and posters.
- Work based learning: completion of the IBMS Registration Portfolio leading to HCPC registration and other practical skills managed by the workplace mentor/supervisor.
How you'll be assessed
The course uses a variety of assessment methods allowing apprentices to demonstrate a wide range of strengths:
- Laboratory investigations: to assess a range of intellectual and practical skills.
- Laboratory/research reports, poster presentations, essays, and examinations: to allow demonstration of writing skills.
- Oral presentations and verbal defence of posters: to demonstrate their verbal communication skills.
